Summer is in full swing and that means so is the sun! The heat in Maryland has not been for the faint of heart, but in addition to staying hydrated and protecting our skin, we must also protect our hair and scalp too! Define Hair artists Jennifer Lang & Mary Forrest share their hot tips for the sun, beach, swimming, and more!

~Wear a hat when possible to protect your hair from the sun! Hats do so much more than protect our faces, they also give our delicate scalps and locks shelter from the rays.

~UV protection is crucial for color longevity and moisture & strength preservation. Choose from any of our in stock UV protection options for hair such as:

  • Davines SU Hair Milk. It is a leave-in nourishing hair milk enriched with UV protective filters that protect and hydrate color-treated hair during sun exposure. Spray it in wet or dry hair before going in the sun. Did we mention it also smells amazing!
  • Oribe Invisible Defense Universal Protection Spray. This weightless mist has many benefits including preventing dryness and color-fade caused by UV rays, detoxifies and protects against environmental pollution, provides 450 degree heat protection, helps prevent frizz. This is a light-weight spray that can be used on wet hair to detangle or wet or dry hair before sun exposure.
  • Oribe heartless styling balm is amazing to put in before braiding, or to enhance natural waves. I love that product.

~If going in salt water or ESPECIALLY a chlorinated pool, do your best to tie your hair up in a bun or clip and not submerge it under water. If you want to submerge your hair in the pool, soak your hair with regular water from the shower first and use a heavy leave-in conditioner before going in the pool to act as a barrier between the chlorine and your hair. Wetting your hair down beforehand prevents the chlorine from being the first thing soaking into your dry, sometimes porous hair.

~Use a deep-cleansing/clarifying shampoo after going in chlorine/salt water to remove impurities such as Redken Cleansing Cream, k18 Detox, Davines Solu, or Oribe The Cleanse. All except Redken are color-safe, gentle and can be used on chemically treated hair. Also for swimmers, especially kids that do swim team, an in-salon  Malibu treatment is definitely needed towards the end of summer to get all the chlorine out of the hair.

And as always, come and see us at Define all summer long for a trim, conditioning treatment, and beautiful blow-out/style – so we can assess the health of your hair, keep it healthy, make customized recommendations, and ensure that you look and feel your very best! ♥️
